Well, since we both love the first album...what can I say? I never really felt imperiled, as of course, I assume Rob, Dire and other like minded pitbulls are resting nearby, itching for a fight or a defense, or maybe just enjoying a good blood letting? Hmmm...

Now I've read the thread in question. Hmm, lots of knee-jerk reactions, accent on 'jerk.' There's no way I could think enjoyment of the Dead depended on live shows: I only ever saw one, and it sucked big time (and it was an NYE, to boot!) Radio broadcasts were my 'live experience' and I enjoyed the hell out of them...

Thank ya, Thank ya... (Jerry Voice). :)

Anyway, "The Wheel" never sounded that great live, and then there's the studio version... which causes a consistent, out-of-body experience in this listener... so people who don't listen to the studio stuff are missing out. Even the studio Dark Star (Under 3 minutes long!) has some nice things about it...

Blues for Allah and Garcia are my fav studio ones.

There's much good stuff on other ones but now with custom CDs and an iPod, I can trim out the lessor versions. Terrapin is good, but I fade out when the English fanfare takes over.

Oh God, yes. And that Choir, that seems really out-of-place to me. "Terrapin!"

It sounded like The Grateful Dead covering Jethro Tull.

Like Terrapin in concert, on record it goes on far too long repeating the same thing.

It would have been better to reduce the fanfare drastically and morph to Transit and out. Maybe the producer thought the stuff waiting in the wings was too weak.

I'm not sure if Terrapin itself was limiting, but the best the Grateful Dead did with it was fading to Drums. Was there ever a segue to another song?

Oh yeah, Garcia. I liked the sound collage stuff too, and esp the crazy graphic in the songbook. It's not mentioned much but parts were heard on demo reels and a Cher perfume commercial.

Damn...where were all of you when I needed you in the great Terrapin as melodrama debate some months ago with Trumpethead?

I know we mentioned Wheel, BUT you are right to list the Garcia album! I always forget to, but I rank it right behind Beaut/Work for top studio output! Big oversight on my part...
